Industry man dies after struck by car

As he was returning from the Plaisance Market yesterday morning, a 59-year-old man was fatally struck on the Industry Railway Embank-ment Road by a car whose driver was reportedly on his cellular phone at the time.

Barosh Jaisingh

Barosh Jaisingh of Lot 2 Industry Front, East Coast Demerara died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) while receiving treatment, relatives said.

Police in a press statement said that Jaisingh was riding his bicycle along the stretch of road when he was hit from behind by a motor car proceeding in the same direction. They were both moving west along the southern carriageway.

The driver, police further reported, is in custody assisting with investigations.

Jewan Henry, the brother of the deceased, told Stabroek News that a woman and a man who had been weeding the front of her yard at the time witnessed the incident. The woman, he further said, has since given a statement to police.

“The woman live right on the same side of the road where the accident happened…she said that she was out there looking at the man do her weeding when she heard a loud sound…she said that when she look up she see my brother on the windscreen of the car and the vehicle skid several yards away from the point of impact before it stopped,” Henry reported.

Another resident who was in the vicinity when the incident occurred alleged that the driver had been speaking with someone on his cellular phone.

“A lil before he knock this man (Jaisingh) I look up and see he fly past me and he been driving with one hand because he been on he cell phone,” the resident said.
When Stabroek News visited the scene just over an hour after the incident police had already been there to mark the point of impact and take measurements. Several residents also told this newspaper that the area, close to a bridge, is very dangerous. Motorists, they said, were always speeding along the Railway Embankment Road.

Meanwhile, at Jaisingh’s home preparations were being made for a wake. Several relatives and friends had gathered at the man’s house to offer comfort to his wife.

“If you see what this car did to my brother,” Henry said. “Several of his bones were broken…he didn’t deserve to die this way.”
