President of the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) Oliver Insanally said plans are in train to embark on a comprehensive public awareness and education campaign to promote animal welfare in Guyana.

In his report at the society’s AGM held recently, Insanally said there were many successes over the last year and the society continues to achieve its objectives through relentless efforts to enhance and uphold animal well-being. According to a press release, Insanally said last year the society provided general treatment and care, spayed 339 and neutered 119 cats and dogs, administered 6,513 vaccinations, re-homed 590 cats and dogs and euthanized animals when necessary.

The GSPCA also elected a new executive for July 2010-2011 comprising Jennifer Falconer, vice president; Sheromanie Isaacs, secretary; Dominique Ahmad, treasurer; Lalita Pandey, assistant secretary/treasurer and committee members Dr Steve Surujbally, Dr Nicholas Waldron and Robin Sivanand. Insanally was returned as president.

Insanally said he was grateful to the donors who contribute to the sustainability of the GSPCA. He also emphasised the need for the society’s members to become more active in furthering its work and invited more persons to become volunteers.

Additionally, the society presented a plaque to Kumar and Shalini Singh in recognition of their efforts to re-home abandoned animals and sponsoring spaying and neutering of cats and dogs in Region Three.
