Gov’t accounting system zapped by thunderstorms

Government’s automated accounting system has been knocked askew by the spate of thunderstorms that has struck Guyana in recent weeks, according to chief spokesman Dr. Roger Luncheon.

Briefing the media on matters arising at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting the Cabinet Secretary said the recent phenomena had damaged several structures and installation and led to the Ministry of Finance’s Integrated Financial Management and Accounting System (IFMAS) being rendered unserviceable for a while.

According to Dr. Luncheon, both the central processing at the ministry and connectivity to the regions were affected.

“Temporary arrangements have been put in place and processing services have been restored centrally. That arrangement however has forced delays in processing, none of which should last, the minister advised, more than 24 to 48 hours. Connectivity, however, has not been fully restored so budget agencies can only process by physically presenting themselves and their data at the Ministry of Finance in Georgetown.

IFMAS is responsible for ledgers and electronic budgeting and is expected to reduce the use of cash as well as processing time, enhance advance planning and increase accountability of public officers for transactions.
