Miner, 58, dies after hit by tree at Quartz Stone Backdam

A 58-year-old miner of Quartz Stone Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven, died after he was struck by a tree when a mining pit collapsed.

Dead is 58-year-old Sherman Tang of Quartz Stone Backdam.

Police in Regional Divi-sion #7 say they are investigating  the incident that occurred between April 21st, and April 23rd, at Quartz Stone Backdam.

Police inquiries revealed that the victim lived and worked alone in his camp at Quartz Stone Backdam where he was last seen on April 21st leaving his camp by another miner.

However, on April 22nd, the other miner made checks for Tang in hopes of partnering with him, but he did not locate him.

According to the police press release, he returned the following day and found Tang  alive but injured near his work ground.

He contacted the victim’s cousin, who went to the location and assisted in taking him to his camp. According to the cousin, Tang told him that he was operating his jet when the mining pit wall caved in causing a tree to fall and hit him, affecting his ability to move. As such, he remained lying at the location since Sunday, 21st April.

Efforts were made to have the victim transported to the hospital but to no avail.  As such, he was taken to his camp. On April 24th at about 4.30 am, the cousin made checks again on Tang and found him motionless.

A report was made to the police and upon arrival at the scene, the body was examined and several injuries were seen, including abrasions to his knee, head, and right shoulder.
