The future power behind the throne?

Please, let us not beat up on ‘Unca’ Donald. After all he has served the party faithfully for so many years. Surely he deserves to be rewarded with the candidacy of President of Guyana. Isn’t this in keeping with the culture of appointment to public office where an egotistical few determine what is best for the people?

Here is how I figure it. Mr Donald Ramotar will be selected as leader of the PPP for the upcoming election, and if the voting trends persist, he will be the next President of Guyana. Will he be able to perform the job? Many will argue that he lacks the charisma, the experience, the depth, the big picture mentality, the ability to play on the world stage. But here is the kicker: he doesn’t need all that. Why? He will have young, 46-year-old unemployed Bharrat with all of that.

Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, after he demits office, has no plans to go anywhere. He loves what he does, being President of Guyana and the idol of  most of Indian Guyanese people. Unfort-unately, the two-term limit deprives him of a constitutional right to a third term. So the plan is to have ‘Unca’ Donald as a ‘figurehead’ President, and to have himself appointed as Prime Minister, the functional head of the government.

A stroke of genuis? Well not really. He has the playbook of the Russian Federation to work with. Remember the political arrangement in 2008? Vladimir Putin demitted office as President and Dmitry Medvedev assumed the presidency. Putin became the Prime Minister and is known as the man who wields the real power.

Way to go Mr President, or should I say future Boss Prime Minister?

Yours faithfully,
Shawn Mangru
