The government has no axe to grind with the trade union movement

Dear Editor,

Mr Lincoln Lewis is again at it.  While I will not deal with his inaccuracies, he is now making a new sweeping charge against the government of working with employers to undermine the trade union movement. It has been reported that, “Lewis said that what was pellucid, however, was the fact that the Government is now working with employers to undermine the trade union movement in Guyana.”

This PPP/C government has a proud history of supporting and building the trade union movement and the processes that exist and operable reinforce this.

So far this year this year four recognition certificates been issued.  These are:

Also for this year more than seven agreements between unions and companies for wages and salaries have been inked.  BOSAI and NAACIE today signed their agreement.

To those who feel the sky is falling I ask them to look again.  This government has no axe to grind with the trade union movement in our country and we will work to uphold the rights of the workers, both unionized and unrepresented.

Yours faithfully,
Manzoor Nadir
Minister of Labour
