Some owners of rice harvesters in Essequibo are damaging the public road

Dear Editor,

With the advent of a bumper rice crop, Essequibo rice farmers who own rice harvesters are forgetting to protect the main roadway. The harvesters which carry iron tracks usually make a deep imprint in the road causing it to deteriorate or form potholes.

While the Government of Guyana is busy in its quest to bring relief to rice farmers by negotiating deals for the sale of rice and paddy, some unscrupulous farmers find it comfortable to drive their machines in the most indiscriminate manner on the public road. We Essequibians suffered tremendously for years because there was no proper road. It will be remembered how many contractors were hired and fired just to get the road completed. Now it’s time to take a stand and prevent continued damage to the main roadway on the coast.

As an RDC Councillor I call on the traffic police along with citizens to tell the defaulters to stop or to report anyone found engaging in this practice to the police.

Yours faithfully,
Andrieko Basir.
