The Ministry of Agriculture is flouting the rules

Dear Editor,

Almost two weeks ago I penned a letter to this newspaper regarding a large herd of cows belonging to NARI that has been roaming St Ignatius Village for over three months and creating a major nuisance to the villagers, especially at nights. I highlighted some of these nuisances and had hoped that the necessary authorities would have taken action to curb this problem.

Yet, for the last two nights these animals were once again in my yard disturbing our night’s rest and creating mayhem.
I ask the authorities once again to look into this issue with some urgency. It seems very uncaring of the Ministry of Agriculture to continue to ignore a situation which is of their doing, and which is causing such a nuisance to the village. You are reminded that villagers are not allowed to rear cows in the village because of the problems that they cause. So why is a government agency being allowed to flout this rule? I even noted that SN sent the letter to the Ministry of Agriculture for comment but none was made. Is this non-response indicative of how the ministry is dealing with this matter?
There is a lot of extensive savannah land in the Rupununi which is ideal for ranching. It is suggested that NARI consider moving their large herd of cows into one of those areas, away from where people live.

Please, NARI or the Ministry of Agriculture, something needs to be done urgently to control these animals. They should not wait until it gets out of hand and then rush in to do damage control and offer meaningless platitudes. The village would much appreciate it if they dealt with this issue now.
Yours faithfully,
M. Abraham
