Problems in Matarkai Sub-Region 1 require urgent attention by the authorities

Dear Editor,

The concerns here at Matarkai Sub-Region 1 are monumental, and require urgent attention by the relevant authorities. On October 6, 2010 there was an attempted rape in Port Kaituma Primary School on a primary school student by five male students. This matter is now engaging the attention of the police at Kaituma.

Since there is no schools’ welfare officer at this location, I think this is a matter of concern for the Ministry of Education.

The probation officer has a heavy work schedule. The Matarkai Sub-Region, Editor, covers a huge area, and most of the far-off communities can only be reached by vehicle. In those far-off locations could be found discos and kaiamos which under-age girls frequent, and which also provide a haven for such girls.

It is my opinion that more could be done if the probation officer could be provided with a vehicle for transportation purposes; this is so necessary. The dark and evil part of life will continue in this sub-region once no action is taken by the relevant authorities.

Yours faithfully,
Ignatius H Roberts
