The appointment of Nawbatt conveys the wrong impression

Dear Editor,

Your news read: “Harry Narine Nawbatt will be Guyana’s new High Commissioner to Canada.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today said that the Government of Canada has granted Agreement to the Government of Guyana for his appointment. Nawbatt will succeed Rajnarine Singh. Nawbatt was appointed as Ambassador to Brazil in November 2008 where he is currently serving.”

When will the Government of Guyana learn? Guyana is a nation of many peoples and in the process of government appointments it would seem fair and reasonable that positions should be shared around. The latest news is that the New High Commissioner to Canada is another Indian who is replacing an outgoing Indian. Are there no persons of Black heritage in Guyana suitable for such appointment?

Why is it that most of these external diplomatic appointments seem to go to one ethnic group since the PPP came into power?

Here in Canada we have a large population of Indian and Black Guyanese not to forget the Portuguese and Chinese, yet year after year we have only Indian appointments and secondments to the offices here. What is further embarrassing is that some of the diplomats lack verbal skills and only give the impression that Guyana is really a backward country with limited educated persons of a high calibre.

It is time that the Government of Guyana showed the world that it is a nation of many peoples.

Yours faithfully,
Carl Veecock
