Warren McKay emerged the overall leader at the end of the second stage of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Annual Three-Stage Cycle road race yesterday.
Mc Kay owed his fine position to a strong second-place finish at the end of stage one and a win in stage two.
Yesterday afternoon Mc Kay sprinted ahead of the competition to cross the finish line ahead of the pack in stage two which finished on Carifesta Avenue.
At the end of the first stage which started at Corriverton, McKay found himself trailing first place finisher Godfrey Pollydore.
He finished ahead of Alonzo Greaves who placed third and Simon Clarke from Barbados, who took fourth position in the leading pack which finished in a time of one hour, 47 minutes and 40 seconds.
Flying towards Georgetown in the second stage, McKay came out in front of the contingent and, with head down breaking the wind in the final stretch on Carifesta Avenue he managed to secure first place with a time of two hours, 33 minutes and nine seconds.
He was closely followed by Raymond Newton in second, Surinamese Murvin Arunjo in third and Geron Williams took fourth, all of whom shared the same leading time as McKay.
After the official tabulation of the times in the first two stages McKay came out on top with a time of four hours, 20 minutes and 32 seconds.
Arunjo finished two seconds ahead of third place finisher Geron Williams to claim second with a total time of four hours, 20 minutes and 44 seconds.
Other top finishers at the end of the day were Newton, Greaves and Clarke who placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The race concludes today with the third stage beginning in Linden and coming to an end on Home Stretch Avenue.
