If a few ads and word-of-mouth is enough to draw an audience then Classique dance company is covered when it serves up another production tonight.
“We’re testing how good our dancing has been these years, so much has not gone into advertising,” director Clive Prowell said earlier this week.
The new production, “Intrapment”, Clive said, sums up how the dancers currently feel; they are seeking new audiences and a bigger stage.
In ten years Classique has gone from an up-start dance company to a contemporary powerhouse with a loyal following. But Clive said the dancers want more. They want international recognition and invites that creates greater exposure and ultimately, opportunities.
Someone probably heard them because the core group of the company has been invited to perform at the Folk Festival celebrations in New York tomorrow night.
‘Intrapment’ will be interesting, according to Clive because the dancers are not only dancing to entertain; they are dancing to ease some frustrations. Normally Classique is on fire; a frustrated Classique could be on a different level.
The show is full contemporary and Clive is also bringing back some lovable characters from previous productions; people Classique had introduced during the drama set of their shows.
“People will see that the dancers are stronger and as usual, really focused. This production is to say to people that we have stepped things up,” Clive declared.
He said members of the school, including the young members and the core group from the company will be on stage “doing what they are good at”.
In total, 45 performers are part of the production and Clive disclosed that one of the “must-see” items is an interpretation of the “Single Ladies” hit by a group of young dance school members. He said too that the production is also bringing back disco.
Since it is for one-night only, Clive said that they are “bringing everything”. Asked about whether a hold-over could be on the cards, he said, “maybe”.
