Contraband liquor seized on East Coast

A team of customs officers on Saturday morning intercepted a minibus transporting contraband liquor during a routine exercise on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

According to reports, a minibus owned by a Corentyne businessman, who is suspected to be part of a smuggling ring, was intercepted by the Customs officers in the vicinity of Enmore on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

A search was undertaken on the vehicle and 25 cases of Johnnie Walker Scotch as well as a similar quantity of Absolut Vodka were discovered in the vehicle. Reports are that the person transporting the items was ferrying them to a location on the ECD. The liquor reportedly originated from neighbouring Suriname.

The driver of the vehicle was released on $30,000 station bail while the vehicle  and items were detained by the Customs officers. Charges are expected to be laid against the driver of the vehicle shortly.
