Repairs underway on CPCE roof

Employees of a local construction firm are expected to complete works this week on the roof atop the building housing the library of the Cyril Potter College of Edu-cation (CPCE).

The Ministry of Education, in a statement issued on Monday, said that on Sunday morning, “at approximately 08:45 hours, an entire section (approximately 90 per cent) of the library roof of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) was blown off by unusually high winds”.

The Ministry stated that a site inspection by education officials, including Permanent Secretary Pulandar Kandhi, Chief Education Officer Olato Sam, Special Projects Officer Rabindra Kishum, and CPCE Administrator Lucille Griffith revealed that high winds created an upward force after hitting the northern wall of the library building.

Works being undertaken to the roof housing the library at the Cyril Potter College of Education on Monday.

The agency refuted reports in the Kaieteur News that substandard work undertaken on the building contributed to Sunday morning’s incident.

The ministry stated that continuous pounding from high winds was strong enough to tear apart an entire section of the roof which flew approximately 300 feet away from its original location. This occurrence, the agency stated, gives a clear indication of the magnitude of the wind force that was exerted on the roof.

The ministry also stated that the building was constructed in 1999 and never experienced any prior roof problems.
