China presents sport gear to education ministry

China presented sport gear valued over $2.4M to the Ministry of Education recently to boost physical education and sport in schools.

A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said Chinese Ambassador Yu Wenzhe presented the equipment to Minister Shaik Baksh at the ministry’s Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue.

In his address, Baksh told the gathering that the items will be distributed to the various educational districts nationwide, “more particularly to the eight dormitories in Guyana where students can occupy their time on the weekends… We want well-rounded students coming out of our school system. As a matter of fact we place much emphasis on physical education and sports; we believe it will contribute to the academic achievement in the school system.”

Baksh also said the ministry is expanding the physical education programme countrywide and schools are now being prepared to deliver the sport curriculum. The minister then expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for the donation and for their commitment to youth and sports development.

In response, Ambassador Wenzhe said that he was happy to make the presentation. He then challenged the recipients to work overtime to excel in sport.
GINA said the items included badminton, basketball, football and table tennis gear.
