Bahamas: Task force says no to embryonic stem cell use

(Jamaica Gleaner) The National Task Force on Stem Cell Therapy Treatment is recommending that embryonic stem cells should not be used to create human stem cells in The Bahamas.

Task Force’s chairman, Professor Arthur T. Porter, who presented a copy of the Task Force’s recommendations to Health Minister Dr Perry Gomez, said members unanimously support all of the recommendations within the report.

The Perry Christie government had appointed the task force in November to develop a series of recommendations regarding the possible use of stem cell therapy in The Bahamas.

The task force had been given a mandate to examine the advantages and disadvantages associated with stem cell use, including the more controversial use of embryonic stem cells.

The task force also had to look at how adult stem cells would be used.
