Guyanese David A Olton has completed all his requirements and is now a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), the Board of Certified Safety Professionals has announced.
According to a press release, this highly respected certification is awarded to individuals who meet academic standards, satisfy professional safety experience requirements and has passed two rigorous examinations. The curriculum covers engineering and management aspects of safety, applied sciences, legal and regulatory matters, professional affairs and other safety-related topics.
Olton also holds a Masters degree in Environmental Health and Occupational Safety from Hunter College and is employed at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection as a Research Scientist. He is an old student of St Stanislaus College, a former employee of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards and a past president of the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central.
Certified Safety Professionals specialise in protecting workers, the public, property and the environment by identifying, evaluating and controlling hazards. The CSP directs safety programmes at a corporate level to reduce risk and loss.
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals, governed by 13 directors with seven membership organisations, establishes standards for and verifies minimum competency in professional safety practice.
