Two remanded on ganja trafficking charges

Two men accused of having cannabis for trafficking purposes were both remanded to prison yesterday by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Accused Mark Solomon, of 591 East Ruimveldt, denied the charge against him, which stated that on August 5, at the Bartica Stelling, he had in his possession 912 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The prosecution’s case is that the police, acting on certain information received, conducted a search on Solomon’s person, resulting in the discovery of the substance.

The unrepresented Solomon was refused bail and remanded to prison because the court found that no special circumstances relating to the offence were advanced to the court.

The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for August 16.

Meanwhile, Mark Collins was charged separately with having possession 444 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He denied the charge that on August 5, at Mazaruni, Essequibo, he had the cannabis in his possession.

Collins, unrepresented by counsel, was also remanded to prison after the court found that no special circumstances existed. No facts of what transpired on the day in question were related to the court.
The case was also transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for August 16.
