Those loyal to the PPP should ensure its democratisation

Dear Editor,

An examination and analysis of Gecom’s declared results of the 2011 elections would show that that close to 25% of the traditional PPP supporters either voted against the regime or stayed at home. Given my own observations of low voter turnout in PPP strongholds on Election Day, and now my access to Gecom’s hard copy Statement of Polls, I do believe that a much greater number of Indo-Guyanese either stayed home or voted against the PPP.

By doing so, Indo-Guyanese put an end to the PPP’s control of Parliament, but we are still stuck with dictatorship as evidenced by the police shooting of peaceful protestors and now the firing of Freddie Kissoon from the University of Guyana. The majority of Guyanese sought to do away with the dictatorship and its accompanying corruption, nepotism and immoralities. However, due to a communist style constitution the minority PPP now forms the government.

As matters now stand the PPP leaders were all creatures of Janet Jagan who was a Stalinist, and on a daily basis we see the Stalinist psyche of the leaders as evidenced by their blaming their electoral loss on everyone else but themselves, and worse, going after critics such as Freddie Kissoon. Today the biggest obstacle to democracy, peace, and progress is the PPP.

What a travesty of justice and democracy it is that a communist party such as the PPP that does not allow free and fair elections within the party, uses national elections to obtain and abuse power. Those who remain loyal to the PPP have a duty to ensure that the PPP reforms itself into a democratic party where the members can freely elect their leaders, and more importantly elect their presidential candidate in the near future.

Those Indo-Guyanese who support the PPP solely on ethnic grounds, especially the racial ideologues, and they know themselves, must democratize the PPP so that in future the very best qualified person can be elected as the party’s presidential candidate. If the PPP were a democratic and nationalist party the history of Guyana would have been vastly different. So long as the PPP remains rooted in its current Stalinist nature it will remain the stumbling block to democracy, peace, and progress for all Guyanese.

Yours faithfully,
Malcolm Harripaul
