Ramotar’s claims are outrageous

Dear Editor,

The claims made by Mr Ramotar whereby he accused the opposition of “criminal behaviour” are outrageous. The Stalinists in the PPP are masters of falsification and misinformation, hence the use of the state-owned Chronicle and the National Communication Network (NCN).

I made allegations since in September last year that GECOM was preparing to rig the elections and repeated the same allegations on Channel 6 Television after the elections results were declared. The PPP is mortally afraid of what is going to follow due to their failure to achieve election results in their favour and consequently totally control the running of Guyana. They are very reluctant to proceed to manage the country as a minority government, where they are now in office, but not in power. It is a very uncomfortable position to be in, having mismanaged the country’s economy for nearly 20 years, when there was massive corruption, widespread nepotism and squandermania.

Mr Granger’s statement is appropriate and correct in calling on Mr Ramotar to immediately withdraw those remarks or prove them, as Moses Nagamootoo has remarked. Guyanese all over the world need to come down completely on the side of the people of Guyana and express their solidarity with the opposition forces in the interest of the majority of people  – 51% – who voted for fundamental changes in the country.

The aid donors (the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and Inter-American Development Bank) must take note of the attempts by the PPP to frustrate the will of the Guyanese people who voted to end one-party rule and usher in a style of governance that must involve all the parliamentary parties.

This new dispensation  is what we voted for and what we must get.  The attempt to try and force another election before the end of the five-year term will spell chaos and confusion in the country and will not be in the PPP’s interest.

I do think they understand where we are coming from and would be well advised to steer the course of a government of national unity and reconstruction and stop playing the fool.

Yours faithfully,
Jinnah Rahman
