I was a proud delegate who attended throughout the PNCR General Council Meeting last Saturday.
I was amazed at the way certain sections of the media twisted what took place.
We had vigorous debates which is a good thing – the characteristics of a vibrant membership within a truly decent and democratic mass organization. The Party can be proud of this.
Presentations by our Opposition Leader and Presidential Candidate, Brigadier David Granger and Party Leader, Mr Robert Corbin were incisive, timely and indeed prepared the ground for party members and supporters neither to tarry nor tire.
The PNC is Guyana’s Political Colossus on the horizon, but as I discussed certain proposals raised at the meeting with responsible members, the urgency for expanding recall legislation to include municipalities became apparent.
This is not new, I recall as a young “Turk” a General Council meeting of the PPP held on May 03, 1953, the General Secretary of the then United PPP, Mrs Janet Jagan proposed the recall system for legislators. This was in reference to those who underperformed and lost touch with the masses, or had become self-centred, egoistic, forgetting in most cases, on their own, they could account for very little.
This proposal was made in the presence of a delegation from the British Communist Party and others. The idea had the support of the Party Leadership.
Certain circumstances delayed the legislation for decades.
All parties and organizations need hardworking members and moreover, discipline at all levels.
Look at the confusion in cricket and football for starters.
The advocate for expanding this recall legislation must no longer be shy. Allow the people to benefit from strong discipline, sincere, honest and proven leadership.
