Dear Editor,
In the Guyana Times, a letter writer says that Guyanese need to take “child abuse” cases much more seriously. I agree with this. Child abuse may be quite overt and any noticeable occurrence must be reported and investigated by the various authorities. However, what about cases which are much more subtle? For example, there is verbal ‘cussing’ down, minors working at various places and truancy. These kinds of things are happening all across Guyana and they must be addressed on a consistent basis.
No sudden and quick move will do it. If minors are left to themselves, then imagine what the city and villages will be like. I call on the Guyana Police Force, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security to act with some kind of urgency. This all talk and no action thing must stop. Whether or not these entities accept the urgency and importance of this, they must get on the programme.
