Suspected bandit dies in shoot-out with cops at Meten-Meer-Zorg

Police this morning killed a suspected bandit and captured two as they were about to commit a robbery at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.

The details are sketchy but Stabroek News understand the ranks pursued about six armed men and managed to corner two in the neighbouring village of Meten- Meer-Zorg. One was shot dead on the roadway while another was cornered in a yard. Residents came out in their numbers but were tight-lipped. Stabroek News understands that a taxi driver and his vehicle are in police custody. He has admitted that he is a relative of the dead man and that they were on a robbery. Stabroek News understands too that one of the bandits jumped onto a bicycle and sped down the road shouting ‘thief, thief’.

Police are still combing parts of the West Coast area in search of the remaining man.

Police this afternoon issued the following release:

“Acting on information received that an armed robbery had been planned, the police staked out an area at Kastev Housing Scheme, Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, this morning Monday September 16, 2013.
At about 1000h. two motor vehicles, bearing number plates HB 7644 and PPP 9366, drove up and four men, two of whom were armed with handguns, exited the vehicles.
The police ranks challenged the men who opened fired on them. The police returned fire fatally wounding Kirk Bacchus, of Paradise, ECD. A 9mm. pistol with two live rounds was recovered.
Two of the other men have been arrested and the motor vehicles seized by the police.
The fourth man, who is armed with a firearm, escaped and is being pursued by the police.”
