Chelsea Edghill emphatically claims U18 title

Fifteen-year-old Chelsea Edghill utilized her superior talent to impose her will during the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), National Sports Commission (NSC) Mashramani Table Tennis Tournament yesterday at the National Gymnasium.

Edghill, the 2010 Junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year, stormed to an emphatic win in the girls 15 and under category.

The fourth form Bishops’ High School student who captured the RMSL Super Singles Table Tennis Tournament in Trinidad and Tobago last December, was impeccable in the girls 18 and under category. Edghill won all her games in that category in straight-set fashion; not conceding a single set.

In the girls 15 and under final, Edghill was impressive in her domineering 4-0 win against top challenger Akeicia Nedd who had raced through the competition in the earlier rounds. In the final, however, Nedd was humbled in just about 15 minutes total as Edghill prevailed 11/7, 11/5, 11/3 and 11/6.

Edghill teamed up with Kristie Lopes and prevailed in similar fashion in the girls’ doubles competition. In the final Edghill and Lopes came up against Nedd and girls 15 and under champion Priscilla Greaves, and dominated winning by a 3-0 margin.

Edghill then joined forces with Queen’s College student Shemar Britton who won the boys 15 and under and 18 and under titles to take first place once again in the mixed doubles competition. The Edghill-Britton combination proved to be unstoppable and they captured the title by brushing aside Kristie Lopes and Elishaba Johnson 3-0 (11/7, 11/7, 11/2) in the final.

Edghill told Stabroek Sport that she was looking forward to competing in the senior edition of the tournament next week. Edghill hopes to find more opposition from opponents in the women’s category such as Natalie Cummings, Trenace Lowe and Jodie Ann Blake if they are in competition next week.

Fourteen year old Kyle Edghill, who was the runner up in the boys 15 and under and 18 and under categories, teamed up with Britton in the boys doubles, but they were upset by Johnson and David Duncan.  Duncan and Johnson pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory (11/5, 13/11, 3/11, 9/11, 11/7) to close out the top two junior boys of the weekend. The senior categories of the tournament are expected to take place next weekend at the same venue.
