Airy Hall conservancy breach sealed

The breached conservancy dam at Airy Hall on the Essequibo Coast that caused over 200 acres of rice fields to be submerged and a number of homes to be flooded was yesterday repaired by workers from the region and central government.

When Stabroek News contacted the regional Chairman, Parmanand Persaud yesterday, he said that the gap has been filled. “Work was completed late last evening. The work was a temporary one that was done by a contractor whose name is Sukhai and the water has receded.”

Rice farmers and  cattle rearers suffered significant losses because of the flood and are happy that the water has started to recede. While some are still trying to come to grips with their losses, others are in the process of cleaning up.

There had been charges from Airy Hall residents that the conservancy had been neglected for some time and that the compromised part should have been detected earlier.
