Taxi driver shot during $4M robbery

A taxi driver was shot yesterday morning during an attack by three men, who robbed him of $4M in front of the Sleep In hotel on Brickdam.

Fazil Ali, 46, is nursing gunshot wounds to his left shoulder and abdomen at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police, in a statement, said the attack occurred at about 8:20am.

Investigations revealed that Ali was waiting in his car outside of the hotel, when he was confronted by the three men and held up. “The armed man shot Ali to his left shoulder and the perpetrators took away a bag with $4M and escaped in a waiting motor vehicle,” police added.

According to information received, Ali was entrusted with the money to drop it off for someone to buy materials.

He was in front of the hotel waiting to drop off the cash when he was confronted by the three men. One of them shot him twice to the shoulder and once to his abdomen.

The men snatched the bag of cash and escaped in a silver Toyota vehicle. According to a source, the police arrived at the scene promptly and quickly carried the shot man to the Georgetown Public Hospi-tal. His wife Zabeeda Ali told Stabroek News that she received a call from someone at the hotel, who told her that her husband had been robbed and shot. She said she immediately went to the hospital. “I thank God that he wasn’t killed,” she said, while waiting on him to come out of surgery.
