Frequent blackouts in Region Two

Dear Editor,

For the past two weeks the residents and businessmen of the Essequibo Coast are facing frequent blackouts which sometimes last for 6-8 hours per day. Many of our electrical appliances are being damaged by these sudden and constant blackouts; our fish, meat and other perishables are spoiled and have to be thrown away. The two Wartsila power plants over the years have malfunctioned and operated inefficiently because of inadequate maintenance and have been generating electricity below capacity.

Guyana Power and Light (GPL) will have to acquire new power plants since these two Wartsila plants have outlived their usefulness. Essequibo will not get far without a regular, stable and efficient power supply.

We are faced with the same reality regularly; whenever there is a blackout, the entire region is plunged into darkness and the pure water supply systems malfunction. We are hoping that some direct action is taken to rectify this situation soon and bring some relief to the residents of Region Two.

Yours faithfully,

Mohamed Khan
