The late Joseph Bacchus played a role in the struggle for free and fair elections

Dear Editor,

I hasten to pay tribute to Mr Joseph Bacchus late of 22 Trotman Alley, Wismar-Christianburg in the Town of Linden, Demerara, who died on September 30, 2014.

He was the leader of the National Democratic Front, a political party which played a significant role in the struggle for the consolidation of democracy and the role of free and fair elections.

As leader of the National Democratic Front his party was a member of the Patriotic Coalition for Democracy (PCD) which spearheaded the change in the election procedures of Guyana by championing the system of counting ballots at the place of poll.

His political party – NDF – was one of the founding parties in the formation of APNU.

Mr Bacchus played a major part in the political struggles for the masses during the 1960s and faced many challenges.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Yours faithfully,

Clifton M Llewellyn John
