The Miss Guyana Universe pageant has come and gone, with favourite Niketa Barker taking the crown and title at the Pegasus Hotel-staged event. I nicknamed it the Miss Gully Ras pageant, because I found it quite ridiculous that when patrons entered the VIP section they were given bands that read: “Gully Ras Birthday”. Pageants are largely about the evening gowns and while they all appear here, I selected the two dresses that stood out the most to me on the night of the pageant. They were from Randy Madray and Michelle Cole.
After the pageant I began to reflect and understand why it is so important for designers to have the right persons wear their clothes and why they fight down and bid to dress certain celebrities.
One reason is for the coverage and mileage obviously and the second reason would be that the brand obviously identifies with the muse.
In the case of Randy Madray vs Michelle Cole, I would give best gown kudos to Randy. Jyoti’s stunning chandelier top, Great Gatsby-inspired dress by Michelle Cole is eye-catching, but Jyoti was the wrong vehicle for it. The dress overpowered her.
It also made me see the need for more stylists in Guyana. Stylists and designers function at two different levels and capacities. A designer can design but a stylist determines the best look for your image and body type. As much as I loved the dress, Jyoti’s tiny frame hindered the entirety of its beauty.
Niketa, who wore Randy’s design, has an extremely elegant and exotic look about her. I think this is why she is the hottest print model on the scene at the moment.
Though Niketa’s dress was conservative, mainstream and could be found on ForeverUnique.com, she slayed it. She understood how to make the gown work for her.
With all her poses and Caribbean Marilyn Monroe glamour she made the dress look like a million bucks. This was an exceptional display.
Congrats to Randy for securing such a gorgeous muse for his brand. (Ashma John)
