The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations are just about 90 days away. Are students prepared? This week we asked students along the Essequibo Coast who are preparing to write CSEC for their thoughts on the upcoming examinations. Their comments follow:

Shamar Garraway – ‘I am feeling confident and ready for my CSEC exams because I have been waiting for this time in my life for a long time. The government of Guyana has done a lot to make sure that quality education is provided for students which is great because the youths are the future. Even though I think that the exams will be challenging, I am prepared to work hard in order to achieve success. The teachers have been a great encouragement to each form five student and I believe that each child should be thankful for that.’

Tremacie Fredericks – ‘Although I am not ready for the rapidly approaching CSEC examination, I am striving to achieve my goals. I know some people expect me to do well while others may not but the decision for my prosperous future lies in my hands. I personally believe that I need to pay more attention and work harder on my Mathematics grades. The quality of teaching at my school is satisfactory and I believe that with cooperation of the students, the smooth flow of learning will be enhanced. The syllabus is not quite completed and since we are approaching the fifth week of school, there is some amount of work left to be done.’

Carolyn Henry – ‘My anxiety is growing for the upcoming CSEC examinations but I will put my best foot forward to make sure I achieve my goals. Mathematics and Social Studies are the two main subjects I really need to pay more attention to in order to master them in the examinations.

I think that if students and teachers cooperate in the classroom, things will be easier and understandable. There is a thought that says “God helps those who help themselves” and that is something I believe. I am satisfied with the teaching because I know the teachers are trying their best to help students. The school syllabus has not yet been completed because of the recent flooding of the school compound and the Mash activities.’

Bishma Ramnarine – ‘I am having cold feet when I think about the CSEC examinations and even though I am a bit scared, as a student I am striving to do my best. The SBAs are quite time consuming but since education is the passport for our

futures, I plan to work hard so I can be successful. I am very satisfied that the teachings are being delivered by the teachers in a comprehensive manner. There is still a little more work that needs to be done and the teachers are working tirelessly to

ensure that efficient education is being delivered.’

Seelochanie Persaud – ‘For students to be successful in the CSEC examinations, we have to make sacrifices. Most of the SBAs were not completed on time but I think that students need to make time for studies now. The teachers have done so much for students but the students now have the responsibility to work to achieve their goals. The syllabus is not yet completed but I’m am hoping that this can be done by the end of the month and that each fifth form student will be ready and prepared.’

Alicia Hardy – ‘Each student has to make a sacrifice in order to be successful in the upcoming CSEC examination. The most time consuming and difficult part of preparing for the exams was completing the SBAs. Now that we have moved on from that stage, it is time to start studying hard. That is the only way I will be successful. My weak subject is Mathematics and I’m working in building my grades before the final exams. The teachers have been doing their best so as to ensure that we complete the syllabus. I am hoping that we can be able to get all the work done before it’s too late.’

Shivanand Persaud – ‘I am feeling prepared for the examinations and I am ready to give it my best shot. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so I will try to be successful and make myself and family proud. I have decided to write 9 subjects and even though I know it will be difficult. I am thankful for all the work the teachers have been putting in to prepare students for the exams.’

Hadesseh Alphonso – ‘I am going to work hard to ensure that I pass the CSEC examinations.

The most important subjects I need to pay attention to are Mathematics and Principles of Business. I believe that if I improve in those subjects, I will be able to pass the examinations with ease. I am satisfied and thankful for the teachers because I now have a better chance of coming out successful. We are now working feverishly to complete the syllabus since we were interrupted because of the flooding and Mash celebrations.’

Kishan Rajesh – ‘I am prepared to do well and get excellent results than to do bad and work like ordinary people. The upcoming CSEC examinations may be hard but I am going to work to make it easy since this will be my opportunity to shine. I made a choice to write 7 subjects at CSEC and I believe that it’s a wise decision because I feel capable of handling the subjects I have chosen to write. The teachers have been a great help to each student and I am quite satisfied with what I have

learned. We have not been able to complete the syllabus but I am hoping that this can be done soon.’

Remanda Featherson – ‘I am well prepared for the upcoming final examinations because it will all reflect on what I have completed in the past and what I will become in the future. I have been preparing for these exams ever since I started high school and now I am positive that I will be successful. The teachers have been doing their best in helping us to be ready for the exams and I am truly thankful for that. I am confident that I will be successful and make myself proud.’
