T&T PM troubled by allegations against AG

(Trinidad Express)  Very serious and troubling.

This was how Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar last night described the allegations made against Attorney General Anand Ramlogan.

She also disclosed that there is a second senior Government Minister involved in the controversy.

Speaking to the media at Piarco International Airport  just before 9 p.m. after arriving from Costa Rica, Persad- Bissessar said she intends to meet with Ramlogan and the second Minister as soon as possible.

“I have received no resignation nor have I spoken to the honourable Attorney General.

“What I will say,  the allegations I have been reading in the press and the acting Prime Minister has briefed me on those matters with respect to the allegations being made against the Attorney General, I would need to speak to the Minister of course, the Attorney General. They are very serious allegations and very troubling,” said Persad-Bissessar.

“I understand that a second Minister may also be involved so I would want to speak with that Minister as well before we decide on any particular direction as to how we proceed forward,” said Persad-Bissessar.

She said Ramlogan remains AG “until whenever he’s no longer attorney general. I’m not saying that that is the plan of action, I’m saying natural justice demands that I speak with the parties against whom the allegations have been made and then we’ll see what we do from there when I have that briefing.”

“The allegations are exceedingly serious and very troubling and therefore I will work expeditiously to see what can be done in all the circumstances,” she said, adding that whatever action taken will be grounded and in the best interest of the people.

The Prime Minister also responded to questions on calls for House Speaker Wade Mark to be removed.

She said a Prime Minister cannot remove a House Speaker.

“I understand there may be a motion of no confidence filed and that matter will be ventilated in full for the pros and cons. For myself I’m not of the view that the words as spoken by the honourable Speaker are such as to warrant him being removed if it were we did have the power so to do.”
