Charity man broke brother-in-law’s arm and leg in defence of sister – court hears

A 25-year-old man of Charity, Essequibo was yesterday granted bail when he appeared at the Charity Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce.

Amerdith Persaud, a labourer was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Pradeep Persaud.

Pradeep Persaud is married to Amerdith Persaud’s sister and according to the police, on December 22, 2014 at Charity, the two had an argument after Pradeep allegedly cuffed his wife. Amerdith intervened to defend his sister and reportedly dealt Pradeep one lash to his left foot, two lashes to his back and one lash to his left hand with an axe handle.

Pradeep was hospitalized for three days and he sustained a broken arm and leg.

Amerdith Persaud was arrested and charged and he admitted to the offence, the police said.

However, when he appeared in court, the man who was represented by attorney Latchmie Dindyal, pleaded not guilty to the charge. His attorney asked for reasonable bail to be granted to his client and there were no objections Police Prosecutor Haimwant Ramsewak.

Bail was subsequently granted in the sum of $100,000 which he posted.

The man was ordered to return to court on February 2.
