Nnesha Hinds resigns

After more than nine months without pay Nnesha Hinds has resigned as a Clerk II in the office of the Georgetown Mayor.

Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green told the councillors at Monday’s statutory meeting that it was unfortunate that the young woman was “battered and humiliated by the city administration; insulted by a person in senior position who doesn’t have a certificate to show”.

Hinds who had worked in the Mayor’s office since July 2014 without pay had applied to fill the post of a General Clerk II after the resignation of the previous holder of the post. The Mayor and councillors maintained that Hinds was fully qualified to hold the post of Clerk II and had provided original certificates to confirm her claimed accomplishments.

However, Acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba had objected to Hinds’ appointment. Sooba contended that Hinds did not have the necessary experience for the post of Clerk II and should accept a demotion to Clerk I after 8 months on the job. Sooba had assured the council and press that once this demotion was accepted, Hinds would have been paid.

Sooba refused to approve Hinds’ payment as Clerk II despite protest by Hinds and the Mayor and Councillors. Hinds has resigned without payment.
