Meanwhile, in a statement issued yesterday, the Indian High Commission said the potential exists for India and Guyana to work together on many fields and it identified agricultural development, education, health, infrastructure, renewable energy, forestry, pharmaceuticals and information technology as being among them.

It added that during the first meeting between the President and the High Commissioner after the formation of the new government, discussions were held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere on various areas of cooperation between India and Guyana to further the relations between the two counties.

The statement noted that traditionally the relations between India and Guyana are cordial and friendly.

India was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations in 1965 with Guyana even before its independence. These relations have been strengthened and consolidated over the period with many high level visits from both sides since Guyana’s independence, the statement added.
