High Court order relating to chicken pen not enforced

Dear Editor,

Despite the fact there is a High Court order made in 2010 by a Judge in Chambers restraining the owners and proprietors of a large, stinking, rat and fly-infested chicken pen in Chateau Margot, a residential community, the uncaring owner still stubbornly continues to operate and carry on that illegal business as usual, that is a health hazard and irritation to neighbours. And in addition, about a dozen letters were published about this matter.

That chicken pen is a nuisance to its surrounding and beleaguered neighbours because the owners do not clean it daily.

It was brought to the attention of the local authority at the Better Hope office and even to the sanitary office there too, but for reasons only known to her, she just listens and turns her head the other way. The NDC officer in charge of health matters told us in his inimitable manner that “Dat nah abee matta; abee nah concern.”

The court order was made on the application of the Environmental Protection Agency, and several residents were in contact recently with that agency to request that it enforce the order, but with the non-committal platitudes from the EPA officers, and some senior members of the local NDC here, the owner continues business as usual.

I wonder if the Minister of Health or any other senior officer, ie the Chief Health Officer, is cognizant of this ongoing health nuisance. If they do and are turning a blind eye to it then this is a letter for the President of this country’s attention.

Yours faithfully,
