A possibly significant development

Dear Editor,

The arrest and subsequent charging of four police officers in the ‘cocaine bus’ bribe case represents a possibly significant development for the Guyana Police Force and larger society. It could be a major turning point and ushers in some guarded optimism.

Any close scrutiny will indicate that this action is the first of its kind in this country. That is, where a substantial amount of this destructive business and the alleged police participants are exposed to the public glare.

This public secret reveals the vast extent of the dirty narcotics industry (and industry it is), as well as its floods of cash, and a compromised force operating on its knees. While it would be gratifying to learn how many succumbed before, that is now moot and unrecoverable water-under-the-bridge. That is lost history, no matter how sordid and infuriating and unjust.

Today, however, this breakthrough instance goes far on several fronts, if continued. It tells several stories. First, there is the zeal to clean house inside the force; second, there exists the will to pursue the external ‘big fish’ to reduce the level of their activity and degrade their assets; and third, there will be concerted efforts to pinpoint, unearth, and eradicate the cosy relationships and believed ‘Deep Throat’ presences within the force.

Additionally, all of this signals that the new government is serious about returning this society, in so far as practicable, to a place of reason, honest labour, and ethical standards; that principled public servants are appreciated; and that nefarious ones should watch out. It gives life and credibility to codes of conduct and declarations of assets, all lofty declarations and so much paper in and of themselves. Remember: actions speak louder….

Further, the observing (and supporting) ABC people develop the confidence that a trusted reliable local partnership can occur. And this delivers the message to the drug duchies and pretended business barons that the era of Guyana is open for any kind of sweet business is over.

In the GPF, the honourable (as they exist) are encouraged; in legitimate commerce, contributors dare to envision a level playing field; and in society, conscientious citizens can take note and hope.

Now let’s follow closely how this case proceeds in the court system, and what will be the holding.

Yours faithfully,
GHK Lall
