GCC completes T/dad League at the top

Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) concluded their debut campaign in the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Outdoor league by defeating Ventures Hockey Club 2-0 on Sunday at the East Sports Complex in Tacarigua, Trinidad.

Following a scoreless opening half, Sonia Jardine gave the visitors the lead in the 38th minute, slotting home into the net after receiving a pass across the face of the goal from within the left side of the area by Kerensa Fernandes.

The hard-fought contest would be put to bed 10 minutes onward as Gabriella Xavier netted, finishing into the back of the net after a Woodroffe strike was inadvertently parried into her path by the opposing custodian.

With the win, the Bourda based unit finished the league at the top of the table with 20 points. However, some of the other competing teams still have a chance to overtake the Guyanese as they possess games in hand.

On Saturday evening at the same locale, GCC squandered a two-goal advantage to draw with Malvern 2-2.

Defeating their opponents 1-0 in their earlier exchange, GCC would take the initial lead in the 18th minute as Gabriella Xavier slotted home after pouncing on rebound from an initial Kerensa Fernandes attempt. The Guyanese would then make it 2-0 six minutes before half time as captain Sonia Jardine scored, skipping past several defenders following a solo run before striking a powerful strike from the opposing goalkeeper.

Nonetheless, Malvern would begin the comeback in the second period as Kreszia Layne netted fortuitously as her sttempt, following a penalty corner, took a deflection off the stick of defender Ulrica Sutherland and settled into the net. Layne would then earn her side a share of the spoils as she sealed her double eight minutes before the end of normal time, pouncing on a parried shot by the goalkeeper from her initial strike to convert in the back of the goal.
