Gov’t considering relocating Walter Roth museum Government is considering the relocation of Guyana’s first museum of anthropology, the Walter Roth Museum.
Minister of State Joe Harmon at a post-cabinet briefing yesterday told reporters that it is being considered by Government. “I can confirm at this stage that that is something that is being considered,” Harmon said. The museum located at Lot 61 Main Street is situated next to the official residence of President David Granger.
The museum was founded in 1974 and was initially housed at the Department of Culture and was the first museum of anthropology in Guyana.
Although the original site was supposed to be at Bartica, plans were changed as there was a fuel crisis in 1974 and this caused the funds allocated for the museum to be withdrawn.
In 1980, the museum was relocated to its original home on Main Street with the aid of a $20 million restoration project. – Harmon
