WICB should sit with the players and sort out the pay matter

Dear Editor,

It is not as if the WICB is unaware that the relationship between WI international cricketers and the Wavell Hinds-led WIPA has broken down since the Indian tour fiasco. It would have been better if that were not the case, but it is. The WICB must find a different mechanism for dealing with this crisis. It has always found Sammy responsible and reasonable. Ask him to choose a group of, say, 5 members of the team, to meet with the board as requested and talk the matter over. When negotiating parties are as far apart as the board and the players, it is almost certain that there is, at least, a serious communications issue at stake.

Secrecy is one of the huge problems in cricket governance. I understand that not even the DL System used in international matches is publicly available.

The WICB should sit with the players with all the financial information at the table, and sort the matter out. These issues are usually less complicated than they appear on the surface when the parties treat each other as equals. Preserving the reputation of the WICB is not more important than the sustainability of West Indies cricket. The board should keep in mind that receiving less than in the past is not the norm in any endeavour.

Yours faithfully,
Romain Pitt
