Written by Cara Dunn-Gibson
(The poet lives in the Royal County of Berkshire, England)
What I see in Guyana
Is a coconut tree swinging in the wind
It’s trunk, brown and mild like a newborn foal.
What I see in Guyana
Are wild cows eating the fresh green grass
Their calves sleeping by the canal.
What I see in Guyana
Are mosquitoes and flies flying around
Mosquitoes biting people, flies being annoying.
What I see in Guyana
Is a butterfly flying to each and every flower
Like bees flying around.
What I see in Guyana
Is a hummingbird with its long beak going
Into the flowers to drink their nectar.
What I see in Guyana
Are flags flapping around in the wind
Like birds flying in the breeze.
What I see in Guyana
Are people resting in their hammocks
In the cool dark shade.
What I see in Guyana
Are my cousins playing in the sun
While my aunties and uncles are talking to each other
