Dr Ashni Singh for President

Dear Editor,

I am sure that the upcoming congress in August for the PPP/C party will be an interesting one.  We all know that President Bharrat Jagdeo will be unable to run as a presidential candidate at the next general elections and therefore presents all Guyanese with the question of who next?  I have seen several names touted around in our daily newspapers including those of Mr Ramotar, Mr Ramkarran, Mr Nagamootoo and possibly even Mr Robert Persaud.  I must admit that I know little of any of these individuals other than what I read in the newspapers; of course one can’t miss Mr Robert Persaud’s contributions given that he is highly featured in our dailies. I cannot and will not criticize these individuals as I am sure that they understand the roles and responsibilities of the post of President.

As an ordinary citizen of this country, I firmly believe that if our high office bearers do not hold the interest of the Guyanese people in their hearts, there will be no future for our children.  There will only be more corruption, frustration and poverty.  The interest of the Guyanese people must be understood at its fullest.

There are varying age groupings and they each have their own values and expectations which must be catered for in any economic framework.  In my own age group I would expect that the country is prepared to deal with assets, job security, personal advancement; personal security; and a reliable education system.  These are some of the things that we may look for in an overseas society which are absent here.  I am sure that in the elderly age grouping, they have their own requirements.

I would like to propose the name of the Minister of Finance who possesses brilliance beyond many of us.  Dr Singh is a true and tried academic who I know is doing an honourable and respectable job as Minister.  As President, I am sure he will be able to connect with the issues from an honest and sincere point of view, and not be clouded by the ‘fog’ of politics and politicians.

Yours faithfully,
B Singh
