Unknown men terrorize Lincoln Lewis
Union leader Lincoln Lewis was forced to flee his Cummings Lodge residence on Sunday night after three unknown men tried to break in.
Lewis, who said the men tried to follow him using a white car, has not reported the matter to the police, saying he did not know whom to trust. He said he believed the incident was the result of his tireless activism on a range of issues, including the recent killing of the country’s two most wanted men by the security forces. Despite the episode, he said, he remains undaunted and would continue to speak out. “They don’t want to hear what I have to say. They want me dead not alive,” Lewis told a special Guyana Trade Union Congress (GTUC) press conference convened at the Critchlow Labour College yesterday. He did not identify the ‘they’ to whom he referred.
Relating the ordeal, Lewis said that the men parked their car in front of his house and on one occasion, they knocked on his door “like normal visitors.” He said two of them were wearing caps while the third was wearing a flop hat. They first attempted to breach the house just about 10 pm and failing to do so they left. Lewis then turned off the lights in the building. The men, however, returned to the building some time afterward and again attempted to gain entry. Lewis said the men tried to enter the two-storey house through the back and front doors and his bedroom window. It was this point that he felt he had to escape the building. Afraid that the men would open fire on the building after their failed attempts at entry, he left the house on foot and ran all the way to the back of the village. He said the men followed him in a white car, but he was rescued by a minibus driver who took him to the car park in front of Demico House, at Stabroek.
Asked if he had reported the matter the matter to the police, Lewis said he had not. Lewis said he had no confidence in the police to investigate anything he reported.
In response to whether he was fearful for his life, Lewis said: “God ent ready yet to carry me to another place. I have more to do stop the murders…” Lewis also revealed that the union building in Woolford Avenue where he kept his press conference last Friday was broken into and the computer and television set were taken away. “Why would they want to steal the computer?” he asked. He said in the past he has been subjected to threatening phone calls and letters.
He opined that the attack on his life followed his comments last Friday, in which he accused the main political parties of supporting murder after they praised the Joint Services for killing Rondel ‘Fineman’ Rawlins and Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles, two of Guyana’s most wanted and dangerous criminals.
He also continues to criticize the 16% Valued Added Tax (VAT). He pledged that when the world Human Rights body convenes in Geneva next year he would ensure that there is a forum on Guyana.
He added: “I will embarrass them; they would have to kill me.”
Meanwhile, acting General Secretary of the GTUC Norris Witter said that following the episode, the GTUC was “concerned… for the likely threat on our brother’s life and property.” He said “those who seek to still the voices of dissent in our society are seeking to instil fear in this brother who has been fearless under [President Forbes] Burnham, [President Desmond} Hoyte and [President Cheddi] Jagan.” He said the union would defend Lewis and all other Guyanese who “dare to speak out on the transgressions in our society.”
Witter said: “We are concerned that the man with the empty rice pot and insufficient feed for his family feels hopelessness yet is afraid to raise his voice and say his children are hungry and starving with no bright future, and that justice flees the poor.”
He said that GTUC stands committed to defend the rights of Guyanese labour and bring change and good governance for all Guyanese.

on September 16th, 2008 6:11 amNot surprising that Lewis would come under such an attack, but the sad thing is that, some people do not want to hear when a man like him complain,it makes liars of those with their corrupt theories about the crime situation in Guyana.

In reply to the above comment on September 16th, 2008 3:05 pm:I am glad I am seeing sensible people commenting so far. I though the naysayers would have jumped in to comment that the transgression that was meeted out to this great son of the soil (irony definitely) was the works of the ruling party. But i am glad you all raised good points at first read in KN I said to my self that this story smells like a phony and now reading SN it sounds like a bigger phony. Yes they tried entering his house twice from front and back yet this great marathon runner broke free and escaped the three men who pursued him in a car only to be saved by a bus. marathon runner Lewis mind you ran away from a car. This story smells. Lewis probably did not get enough press for his stupid comment on Friday about his condemnation of the ruling party praising the JS for killing Rawlins etal so he came up with this ridiculous story

I’m beginning to see why people don’t trust the police, not when you have “JUDGES” like you. I just pray to God that nothing ever happens to you, and remember what goes around comes around. I would have you for lunch on a witness stand,,,,one day it just may happen, don’t laugh.

on September 16th, 2008 7:10 amJudging from the story line, this is one weird development. If these three guys were outside Lincoln’s house trying to gain entry, how did Lincoln escape his house unnoticed?
Did they guys leave a second time and he seized the opportunity to escape?
And why go to Demico House car park and not go straight to Brickdam or Eve Leary police with a lawyer to make a formal report?
Seriously though,Lincoln is not a gun-toting criminal, so why shoud he be targeted for intimidation or worse?

But from a layman point of view, the story told by Lewis can be true or false depend on which angle your sense of perception is. When a politician saying to the world that there is no faith in the police, all you giving your views should think and ask why. If the president can have people doing the things they are doing to his wife ( show woman) who else can trust the government.
We all as GUYANESE living abroad should ask yourself if you would live in guyana and endulge the nonsense going on.

Why run to the press with the story instead of doing what any law abiding citizen will do. on September 16th, 2008 10:13 amI’m sure Mr Lewis has a cell phone. If someone is following you in a white car and you feel threatened, I.m sure you can also get the license plates number. Use the phone to call the police, and have them follow you and the car that’s following you, then we would know who is following you and why. This story has too many unanswered questions. I know you cannot trust some of the police, but I also believe that there are some that can be trusted. Just got to take a chance.

on September 16th, 2008 10:36 amGreat publicity stunt, Mr. Lewis. You made me laugh and some of these bloggers made me hilarious - imagine an old man like Mr. Lewis out-running the gun-totting killers in a car…imaging an old man like Mr. Lewis out-foxing the killers who surrounded his house and escaped right under their noses…imagine how safe in front of Demico house is - everyone who is being terrorised should flee to Demico House> Oh!… and while there, get some of de fried-chicken so you can retaliate if any killer is lurking.
I thought Mr. Arokium was hilarious…but this takes the cake. Ha Ha Ha.

on September 16th, 2008 11:09 amI have been an active union member all of my 17 years of work life and was enriched by it. Unionisation is certainly a struggle for a better class of living and I saw that while attending negotiations with one of the richer companies in Guyana. It’s an ongoing struggle and Lincoln was always outspoken in the Trade Union Congress and thats the caliber of people taht movement need through out the world. Fighting for better civil right conditions is a fearless battle and few would selflessly sacrifice their time, the way he does. All he wants is a better life for the working class and the opressed although some people targeted in extra -judicial killings do not fall into this category.
Whatever happened to him, there must be some truth to this matter and the government need to pay attention before the International Labor Organisations start creating a media scene about the computer that was removed and the fact that Lincoln a senior GTUC member is under threat here. Goverment workers are highly unionised and if things escalate the GTUC has the power to call their workers out in order for this matter to be resolved.
One for all and all for one!

I agree with mackydog that he is a great sprinter, my opinion is that he should have be sent to the Olympics. L.O.L. If he is telling the truth about what the government is doing so let it be, he is free to speak and if it hurts the P.P.P. that means that they are guilty. I agree with him where the police are concern, I do not trust any of them myself.

They saw three men running from a shack at timehri, one was killed. But, after being in close promixity of the criminals, it took several hours later at Kuru Kururu for them to be killed.

I have three questions: {1} while these men were trying to gain entry, why did’nt you use your cellphone quietly to contact the police whoes mandate is to serve and protect but given your lack of trust for the police, then one would wonder why did’nt you contact someone else you can trust?. {2} Why did’nt you leave right after the first attemp was made to gain entry into your property, why wait still the second time?. {3} How were you able to escape unharm, three men that were within close proximity of your house. Not that it is impossible for someone with military experience but you tell us how you did it.

If you want to really appreciate what Mr. Lincoln Lewis is going through, come back to Guyana and talk up about atrocities that guyanese face, and criticize the policies of the government and you too shall see who you can or can’t trust

on September 16th, 2008 5:59 pmIn reply to the above comment from evileye,i am a guyanese who live in the USA, over 22 yrs now ,and even i know that what you said about taking the proff to the police is a bunch of garbage. Guyana is full of corrupt police and soldiers, and to try and deny that you are only fooling yourself. My mother was robbed in her own home at gun point in guyana while she was on vacation, and this is a N.S citizen i am talking about, the police came and take her statement, and nothing was ever done about it. Two days later my mom recieved info about who the theives were, and she reported it the the police thinking that the will make an arrest, the never make an arrest, but inturn told my mother not ot let anyone know that she knows who the thieves are, because she may be putting her life in danger, two days later the thieves made a phone call to my mother telling her that they heard she went to the police with their names…now take a guest and tell me how did this get back to these bandits hearing,so do not tell me about taking evidence to the police…not the ones in guyana. THEY ARE NOT TO BE TRUSTED, NOT EVEN THE BIG BOSSES.

Regardless of how you feel about the police force the most logical thing to do was to make a report to the nearest police station not seek refuge in front of demico house. Bro we all know you have always been an outspoken person on issues affecting the working class, middle class and the public at large but do not tarnish your reputition with these kind of stories. Such baloney! I wonder who helped him fabricate this story, reminds of a really old netting with many holes filled with mosquitos buzzing around trying to eat you alive.
Why is this man the head of the Trade Unionists if he wants to be a political analyst? Shouldn’t he be repesenting the Labourours who pay his salary instead of creating an even wider racial divide?
