A massive clean-up exercise has begun in South Georgetown and residents hope to host a cultural fete on its completion.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) said the exercise is being undertaken to restore the area to its former beauty. The exercise is a collaborative effort by the government, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) and the residents of Albouystown, Charlestown and La Penitence. The M&CC provided a Hymac and truck to assist with the exercise, which started on Wednesday.
Chairman of the Community Development Council Randolph Thorne, during a tour of Albouystown, told National Coordinator of Community Development Councils, Philomena Sahoye-Shury, that the community has planned a three-day activity from April 7 to 9 that will include a cultural extravaganza, an exhibition and games. Independence Boulevard, which is the showpiece of Georgetown, Thorne said, will be beautified with assistance from donors, residents and persons who have businesses in the boulevard, and converted into a recreational park. He said the exercise is being done primarily for the Cricket World Cup matches.
He said “The M&CC is currently engaged in desilting drains and alleyways in Albouystown and the Ministry of Public Works is currently involved in the construction of roads which includes our famous Sussex Street.” Thorne assured Shury that no effort will be spared to maintain the environmental works being done in preparation for the matches
