Industrial action could heat up at UG Turkeyen campus

Industrial action at the University of Guyana Turkeyen campus is expected to intensify over the next few days if Cabinet does not respond favourably to the University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU) on the transportation allowances issue.

The issue of transportation allowances, which has been a critical part of ongoing negotiations between the university’s union and its administration since 2003, was expected to come up at Cabinet’s weekly meeting.

Bruce Haynes, President of the UGWU said they are likely to scale up the industrial action if Cabinet fails to respond favourably. He said the union held discussions with Minister of Education Shaik Baksh recently and outlined their concerns regarding the allowance, adding that the minister has promised to see how the union can be facilitated.
