Arjoon captures Toucan Industries squash tourney

A new star was born on Saturday night when Alex Arjoon defeated arch-rival Peter de Groot to win category `A’ of the Guyana Squash Association/Toucan Indus-tries sponsored junior squash tournament at the George-town Club.

Arjoon defeated de Groot 9-5, 9-0, 1-9, 8-10, 9-6.

“I felt great winning. The last round was tough but I managed to pull through and I hope that I continue to progress and keep up the standard of play as well in other tournaments,” Arjoon told Stabroek Sport in an invited comment after the match.

The final was a nail-biting affair between the two players, both of whom displayed great skills and good quality play. Arjoon started the match by winning the first two games 9-5, 9-0, but De Groot stepped up to the plate and evened things up by winning the third and fourth games by 9-1 and 10-8 margins.

The final match was very competitive and the two traded points before Arjoon finally managed to streak away from his opponent for a 9-6 win.

Oliver Kear was third.

In the category `B’ Joshua Abdool defeated Jason Khalil in final with Keisha Jeffrey occupying third place.

“There was a pulsing pain in my leg that really hurt but I played through” said Abdool. He added that he was relieved at winning but had anticipated it from the beginning of the tournament.

Nicholas Narain was the winner of the category `C’ event. Second was Kayla Jeffrey while Mary Fung-A-Fat placed third.

Narain told Stabroek sport that he felt excited about the win which was his second for the year. He added that last year was not a good year for him and that he hoped to do better in upcoming tournaments.

In category `D’ Abishek Singh placed first with Nyron Joseph and Lee Fung-A-Fat second and third respectively while in category `E’ Brandon Bento was first with Shaquille Bowen and Gabriel Fraser second and third respectively.

Toucan Industries Ltd. came in for special thanks for their sponsorship as did the Georgetown Club for allowing the GSA to utilize the facilities.

The presentation of trophies was done by Denise Jeffrey. Arjoon and Keisha Jeffrey as well as Nyron Joseph were all recipients of special prizes..
