A subtle difference

Dear Editor,

I read the letter from a reader in London titled “Racist bullying and Political Correctness” in your issue of Wednesday, 24th January.

It came as a surprise to many, including myself, that the strident Jade Goody’s paternal grandfather (now deceased) was a black West Indian. She never once mentioned this, in support of her non-racist claim. As far as I recall, Afro-American Mr Jackson, Michael’s brother, did not directly refer to “another competitor as ‘white trash’ . What he said was that in America such a person (as Jade Goody) would be referred to as “white trash”. I see a subtle difference. Those who think differently, please feel free to correct me.

The episode seemed, at one stage, to threaten the hitherto good relations between the Indian and white communities in the UK. Things seem to have quietened down now.

It just would not do to have both the Indian and Muslim communities against the West – for different reasons.

Yours faithfully,

G Dennison
