War of Words

The Guyanese fighters on this week-end’s fight card are not taking any cheap talks from their Santo Domingo counterparts lightly.

Both Lennox Allen and Leon Moore are promising to repel the foreign invasion with knockouts even as the Santo Domingo fighters begin signaling their intentions ahead of their arrival.

Promoter Carwyn Holland tells Stabroek Sport that while there is a language barrier between the two sets of fighters, all of them speak sign language, that is, the universal language of the fists. Both Edison Morillo and Rafael Romero are saying that immediately following the bouts they would not be surprised if orders are given for them to be deported, given the treatment that they intend to mete out to the Guyanese boxers.

The Spanish speaking fighters will be travelling with one interpreter but they claim that he will not really be necessary as the only conversations that they will engage in will be sign language in the ring. Allen, for his part has already said he is looking past Romero, such is his confidence. He has set the sixth round as the one in which Romero will test the comfort of the canvas of the ring. Still training with Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis on his mind, Allen says Romero has never tested anyone his calibre and will be shocked at the combination of speed and power. Even though Allen is the marquee fighter on Saturday night’s fight card, Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore is looking to steal the spotlight. Moore is down to fight Edison Morillo in the main supporting and says he is looking to steal the show. Moore, who was once a fight or two away from a world title shot has been campaigning in Barbados but is adamant that the white sand and blue waters have not taken the edge off his game. He says the match up with Morillo of Santo Domingo will be an epic battle as Morillo likes to take the fight to his opponent and this will play into his hands. “I will knock him out and show Guyanese that I am once again on the road to a World Title, I know he is an excellent fighter but I will hurry up and send him on his way,” Moore said. He was expected in the country last evening after giving an interview to the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) in Barbados. Holland has secured an agreement for the card to be rebroadcast on CMC’s 24 hour channel Caribvision, as the first of a series intended to showcase the region’s best fighters. The card will be held at the National Park this Saturday October 13.
