PPP extends greetings to all Guyanese on Arrival Day

The PPP in extending greetings to all Guyanese on the occasion of Arrival Day today has observed that the Guyanese culture that has emerged and is still evolving has become rich and no doubt will become even stronger.

“Our distinct Guyaneseness is now very important for the further social and economic development of our country,” the ruling party stated in an Arrival Day  message. Today marks the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first batch of indentured Indians to Guyana, the party noted. It added that “more and more, our Guyaneseness is characterized by the fusion of many cultures from the great civilizations of Europe, Asia, Africa and our indigenous people.”

The  PPP said further that there is no doubt that the  Indians who came here from 1838 to 1917 and their descendants made a great contribution to every aspect of life in this country, the Caribbean and further afield.

And while the vast majority of Indians continue to make their contribution as workers and farmers in our society, the party said, the descendants of the indentured labourers have contributed greatly in business, the various professions, arts, culture and sports.
