A 61-year-old man who allegedly stole 15 steel rods was remanded to prison when he appeared before the George-town Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Hardat Sundat of 71 Gordon Street, Kitty pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that on June 11 Sundat stole 15 steel rods worth $15,000, property of Donald King.
According to Sundat he was just around the area picking up bottles to sell. He said he stuck two of the rods into the ground and turned down his bottles on top of them. The accused told the court that he was beaten by the police, thrown into their van and taken to the police station.
Sundat has been before the court several times on simple larceny charges. “I hungry,” he repeatedly told the magistrate. “I pleading with you to put me on lil self-bail.”
The prosecution said that the accused was caught by persons with four of the steel rods in his possession and he was before the court earlier this year for a similar matter.
He was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to Court Four for Thursday.
