So, what are you getting your mom this Mother’s Day? Yes, we do know that like other holidays, this day has become commercialized and so on but hey, it’s your mother and don’t you think that she deserves a day for her very own, or like the card says, ‘everyday should be mother’s day’.

Having said that, sometimes it is really hard to decide what to get your mother! After all, this is the woman who raised you, looked after you when you were sick, listened to your troubles, corrected you when you were wrong and among many other things and generally gave you the tools to build a successful life.

Never mind that sometimes, you thought that she didn’t really like you (especially when you were bent on doing the wrong thing) or you had wished that she wasn’t so strict. Of course all that changed when she gave you the item that you had for weeks been begging for.
So again, what are you giving her? What does she like? Are you going to take her for a special meal at a restaurant? Flowers, perhaps? The appliance she’s always wanted?
Given that this is the woman, who gave birth to you then took the time to raise you properly, we can only say make it something extra special. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive or even involving money at all. You can let her rest on that special day and do all her normal work for her. Stop hogging the TV and buy her favourite movies for her. She’ll appreciate it. We know.

And make sure that you emphasize that you love her and that she’s the best mother in the world and you wouldn’t wish for any other parent.

Assure her that you’ve forgiven her for hugging and kissing you in front of all your classmates so many years ago or for forcing you to eat the food you hated. Emphasize that you’re really grateful for all the things that she taught you and that she’s the best.

Mothers teach us a lot of things as the email sent to me earlier points out.
Things like religion –“you better pray that will come out of the carpet”; logic – “because I said so that’s why”; irony – “keep crying and I’ll give you something to cry about”; the circle of life – “I brought you into this world and I can take you out”; how to become an adult – “if you don’t eat your vegetables you’ll never grow up”; genetics – “you’re just like your father”; wisdom – “when you get to be my age, you’ll understand” and justice –“one day you’ll have kids and I hope they turn out just like you”.

Appreciating your mother is always in season, so do something extra-special for her this mother’s day. (thescene@stabroeknews.com)
